Sign o’ the Times

Sutekh the Destroyer‘s been at it again this week. Victoria Wood died on April 20. And then of course, Prince died on April 21.

Dude. You’ve got your dates waaaay off.

If you want to skip straight to the peaches and cream,
there’s a cover of Prince’s
When Doves Cry
by early-nineties indie stumblebums Bird’s Fate
at the bottom of the page….

Panama

Well, if there’s one thing that this week’s news has encouraged me to do, it’s go off and listen to some good music. With a hat-tip to Longsufferingreaderoftheblogpaul for sharing it aaaaages ago, here’s Reggie Watts’ cover of Van Halen’s Panama:

https://youtu.be/xetZZLmmEw8?t=1m30s

Where the original is – I’m told – about a race car, Reggie’s version is about the country. What do you think about, when you think about Panama?

The Gospel of the Unicerosaur

As (kind of) trailed by yesterday’s post, apoplectic.me is simulcasting with nerdbaitband.com this week, where Longsufferingreaderoftheblogpaul writes…

Hi, Friends of NerdBait!

Our new piece, The Gospel of the Unicerosaur, is our most exciting and ambitious work to date. We are really excited to share it with you.

So, let’s just cut to the chase… Continue reading The Gospel of the Unicerosaur

Highlander

Mrs Stroke Bloke and I spent this past weekend in the Highlands. More precisely, we were visiting family in Strontian, on the banks of Loch Sunart. One of my cousins asked if I would be writing about our trip in the blog this week. And since she took me to see David Bowie’s Sound and Vision tour stop in Ingliston in 1990, I could hardly say “No.”

“Scotland, stay with us. I mean, do you know how much this coat cost?!”

But first, please note that on Monday, 4 April, I’ll be presenting Nerd Bait’s latest (and maddest) concept EP, The Gospel of Unicerosaurus, as part of Illicit Ink’s show at the Edinburgh International Science Festival!!!

Aye, Robot

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about whether a computer could write a successful musical.

I’m pleased to report that the conclusion of Ivan Hewett’s Telegraph article and Cat Gale’s Sky Arts documentary seems to be “Yes, a computer can write a successful musical.” And I’m even more happy to relate that the answer is also “No, a computer can’t write a successful musical.”

There’s a million things I haven’t done / But just you wait…

On Vacation

apoplectic.me is on vacation this week.

You’ve got to help me. I’ve gone on holiday by mistake.

I’ll look forward to writing to you next week. But in the meantime, please do take the opportunity to catch up with these recent scribblings by a bloke three years removed from a catastrophic haemorrhagic stroke:

  1. The Hofstadter-Moebius Loop – on writing Nerd Bait’s latest short form rock opera.
  2. Will This Do? – on Boris Johnson, in the style of a lazy, research shy, moron.
  3. Will This Do, Too? – more #EUreferendum: why are these lying bastards lying to me?
  4. Stroke Digest #8 – On The Revenant, Richard Dawkins, and a junior doctors’ strike update.
  5. Survival – On The James Plays, lies, damned lies, and statistics.

All from a uniquely stroke-y angle.

Till next week…

The Hofstadter-Moebius Loop

The last two posts on the #EUreferendum weren’t really what I wanted to write about. But the things that are really exciting me right now needed to be put off a bit because they don’t happen for another month or so. And I didn’t really want to bang on about them for a full two months.

“Dude, you’ve been at this for two months…”

Finally, though, I can get some release. With respect to one of these events, at least.

[More banging on in the Apoplexy Tiny Letter, here.] Continue reading The Hofstadter-Moebius Loop

Will This Do, Too?

Last week, I posted my first blog post about the #EUreferendum. 22 February was just two days after MC Wee Davey C had held the first weekend cabinet meeting since the Falkands War, having returned from Brussels in triumph.

“Some of you, perhaps, have already heard what this paper contains, but I would just like to read it to you: BORIS IS A SCRUFFY, TWO-FACED BASTARD.”

Since 22 February, seven months have passed, and the bloody vote won’t take place until 23 June.

[Pass the time with some whimsy over at the Apoplexy Tiny Letter.] Continue reading Will This Do, Too?
